A transducer for torque measurement comprises an annular core, provided with a toroidal exciting winding and contained within a ferromagnetic casing to which is attached a ferromagnetic, tubular torsional member 1 the ends of the torsional member and of the casing being rigidly and conductively connected so as to form a conductive path around the core. As shown, a pair of annular ferromagnetic cores 5 carry toroidal exciting windings 6 connected to an alternating current source 8 so that an exciting current is induced around an electrical circuit comprising a ferromagnetic rod 3, two ferromagnetic casings 2 and a tubular torsional member 1, creating a rotational magnetic field around the torsional member 1. When a torque Mk is applied to the right-hand casing 2, a longitudinal magnetic component is set up in the torsional member 1 in accordance with the Wiedemann effect, thus inducing a voltage into the pick-up coil 4. Alternatively, the pick-up coil may be wound on the outside of the torsional member 1. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the two casings 2 are fixed and torque is applied to the centre of the torsional member 1 between a pair of pick-up coils 4. In Fig. 3 the casings 32 extend over the whole of the torsional member 31, which is provided with a lever 33 projecting through an aperture between the casings 32.
