A surgical bandage is made from an absorbent felted material, the fibres of which carry a thin metal coating which is permeable to moisture. The fibres of the material may be either absorbent or non-absorbent, such as polyamide fibres. Finely-divided aluminium, silver or zinc may be used to form the coating and may be deposited by sputtering or vaporization in a vacuum. If the dressing is to be used where there is a relatively large amount of secretion the metallized fabric may be backed with absorbent material, such as of cellulose.
