PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress color breakup and flicker in a field sequential system. SOLUTION: An image processing circuit 20 generates a separation image signal S2 for designating gradation for each pixel about a white component and a plurality of color components, from an input image signal S1 for designating gradation of a plurality of prime color components for each pixel. A control circuit 30 causes a display 10 to displays a monotone image of each of the white component and the plurality of color components, in each of a plurality of sub-fields SF in one frame F based on the separation image signal S2. The sub-field SF in which the monotone image of the white component is displayed is positioned before starting of, or after finishing of the plurality of sub-fields in which the monotone image of the plurality of color components is displayed. In the frame in which display of the white image is designated, display luminance of the monotone image of the white component is lower than that of the monotone image of each color component.
