PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus and a coating method capable of stably carrying out coating for a long time without film thickness fluctuation caused by a change in the property of a coating liquid, without an increase in coating defects resulting from agglomeration or the like of the coating liquid, and without causing a streak and an uneven thickness of a coating film, even if the coating liquid contains particles larger than the thickness of a newly formed undried coating film. SOLUTION: The coating method for coating a moving substrate with a coating liquid containing particles having a diameter larger than the thickness of a newly formed wet coating film is characterized by overlaying a plurality of coating liquids on the substrate, provided that at least one of the coating liquids is free of the particles described above.
