PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element capable of preventing shading and extending a dynamic range without an increase in power consumption. SOLUTION: A solid-state image pickup element 10 comprises a plurality of vertical charge transfer paths 2 and a horizontal charge transfer path 5 that transfers charges transferred through the vertical charge transfer path 2, wherein the horizontal charge transfer path 5 includes a plurality of transfer stages 5b that operate as a charge accumulation region or a barrier region in accordance with the level of applied voltage, wherein the solid-state image pickup element includes a barrier wall region 7 provided adjacent to an end part on the opposite side of each of the vertical charge transfer paths 2 of the plurality of charge transfer stages 5b and forming a barrier wall to determine an amount of saturated charge for each, wherein the barrier wall region 7 includes a barrier wall region 7b and a barrier wall region 7a higher in potential than the barrier wall region 7b, and wherein the barrier wall region 7a is provided at least on the downstream side in the direction of transfer of the barrier wall region 7b adjacent to the charge transfer stage 5b connected to the leftmost vertical charge transfer path 2.
