PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rope lateral swinging detecting device of an elevator, having a self-test circuit for deciding whether self-test execution is possible or not according to the detection level of a building shake. SOLUTION: The rope lateral swinging detecting device of the elevator detects the lateral swinging amount of the rope generated by a slow shake of a building due to a long period earthquake or strong wind. The rope lateral swinging detecting device determines whether the self-test execution is possible or not according to the detection level of the building shake by the self-test circuit having a self-test selecting switch, and is equipped with a self-diagnosis means for carrying out the failure diagnosis of a seismometer by simulatively generating an earthquake acceleration signal.
