The invention relates to removing organic and inorganic chemical substances from gases, in particular to producing sorption and filtering materials, and can be used for cleaning air. The aim of the invention is to produce a novel filtering material which exhibits high sorption properties, a high efficiency of removing submicron particles, bacteria and viruses, odors, small water drops etc from air and which has low aerodynamic resistance. The inventive filtering material for gaseous medium comprises a nonwoven polymer fiber material as a base, wherein aluminium oxide hydrate particles are secured on the fibers of the surface of one of the sides of the base and in part in the volume thereof, the surface of the opposite side being devoid of said aluminium oxide hydrate particles. The inventive method for producing a filtering material for gaseous medium consists in selecting a base made of a nonwoven polymer fiber material suitable for air filtering, applying particles of aluminium-based material in the form of a water or a water-alcohol suspension thereof on one side of the selected base and in carrying out the hydrolysis of aluminum-based material particles by heating the base and applying said particles thereon for forming and securing the aluminium oxide hydrate particles on the fibers of the surface of one side of the base and in part in the volume thereof.
