PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure improved color reproducibility. SOLUTION: In a color wheel 35, primary color filters of R, G, and B colors are uniformly arranged, and neutral color filters are disposed between the primary color filters. A time division drive circuit 39 controls the drive of a spatial light modulator 31 such that a signal indicating the same color as the color of light emitted from the color wheel 35 corresponding thereto is supplied to the spatial light modulator 31. Following a display control specified by a control section 14, the time division drive circuit 39 controls the drive of the spatial light modulator 31. The neutral color filters are disposed between the primary color filters. Accordingly, during a period of mixture of each primary color and the corresponding neutral color, a projecting section 13 emits the mixed color and hence satisfactory color reproducibility is ensured.
