The method involves forming a sample section with which a pressing force-path course is determined by a machine controller for determining stack height (10) of a sheet-like material stack (7), where the machine controller of a cutter computes a material-specific combined pressing path (11). Pressing force is regulated and adjusted automatically by following progressive dies. The pressing path is obtained with respect to the stack height and/or stack width (8) of the stack. Vertically displaceable press bars of a pressing device are lowered by the pressing force on the stack. An independent claim is also included for a device for pressing a sheet-like material stack when cutting in a cutting machine.
