An aircraft of discus plan-form capable of vertical and horizontal flight and of hovering stationary in the air comprises a body 36 housing a central gas generator 37 which supplies pressure gas through pipes 38 to a plurality of blowers of ejector nozzles 39 disposed radially about the vertical axis of the aircraft to discharge through helical chambers 41 into radial ducts 42 and a chamber 43 from which it is discharged downwardly through nozzles 46 having thrust directions 48 which meet at a point 49 located above the aircraft. The chamber 43 communicates also with radially directed propulsion nozzles 47 which may be controlled selectively to propel the aircraft in normal flight, the thrust axes of which intersect substantially at the centre of gravity of the aircraft. A pair of diametrically aligned nozzles 39 are shown in Fig. 3, each comprising annular hollow chambers 9, 9a which are fed with pressure gas from generator 37 through conduits 10, 12 to exhaust through slots 13. The flow of gas from the slots, by a Coanda effect, entrains air drawn into the aircraft through apertures 50 in its upper surface and discharges it through the convergent-divergent section 18, 24 from which it is directed to the lifting and propulsion nozzles as previously described. The flow of air is directed by a central body 22. In a further embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the shaft nozzles 46 are supplemented by other orientable nozzles arranged around the periphery of the aircraft and which may be adjusted so that their resultant direction of thrust may be inclined to the normally vertical axis of the aircraft to create a component of lateral thrust.
