[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] In a pantograph of variable transmission ratio connecting an engraving or copying tool 2 to a scanning pin 1, applicable to two-dimensional or three-dimensional copying, the scanning pin 1 is carried on an arm 3 of a parallelogram linkage 3, 5, 11, 12, having a pivot 6 on the end of a rod 18 which is fixed in the plane of the drawing, the other end of rod 18 carrying the pivot 10 of a slide 16 adjustably secured to a link 9 pivotally carrying an arm 7 on which the tool 2 is adjustably slidable. The inner end of the arm 7 is guided by a rod 13 pivoted to a slide 17 adjustably secured on the link 11, and the outer end of the pivotal slide 16 is guided by an arm 14 pivoted at one end to the slide 16 and at the other to the extended link 5. For three-dimensional copying the pivots 6, 10 can swing about the axis of rod 18, or about an axis parallel to this rod. The transmission ratio is varied by sliding adjustment of the tool 2 on arm 7 and by adjustment of the link 9 in the slide 16, consequential adjustment of slide 17 being necessary. Preferably the spacing of the pin 1 and pivot 4 equals the spacing of the pivots 4-6 and the spacing 2-8 equals the spacing 8-10, but if they are not equal their ratios must be the same. When the spacing 2-8 is adjusted to equal the spacing 1-4 the transmission ratio is 1: 1 and the ends of the arms 3, 7 are then connected by a removable rod to impart rigidity. When applied to an engraving or milling machine, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), having separately adjustable tables for the template and for the work the rod 18 carrying the pivots 6, 10 can swing about an axis parallel to itself to give three-dimensional copying.
