D 1,4,17(20)-pregnatrienes of the general formula <FORM:0908976/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group and X represents /s7 C=O or <FORM:0908976/IV (b)/2> are prepared by subjecting the corresponding 4,17(20)-pregnadienes to the action of bacteria of the genus Corynebacterium or of the species Bacillus sphaericus or of enzymes formed by these bacteria, under aerobic conditions. Suitable bacteria of the genus Corynebacterium are C. simplex and C. hoagii. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of methanol and/or b -phenylnaphthylamine. In the examples the following compounds are prepared:- D 1,4,17(20)-pregnatriene-11b ,21-diol-3-one, 6a - methyl - D 1,4,17(20)-pregnatriene-11b ,21-diol-3-one and D 1,4,17(20)-pregnatriene-21-ol-3,11-dione. The pregnatrienes of the above general formula may be converted into the corresponding 21-acetates. D 4,17(20)-pregnadien-21-ol-3,11-dione is prepared by oxidising the corresponding 11b -hydroxy-21-acetoxy compound and hydrolysing the resulting 21-acetate of the desired compound.
