A method for determination of optimum power control area and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus thereof are provided to determine the optimum recording power and the power control area exactly by determining whether optimum power control is possible through the signal detection in the optimum power control test area before performing optimum power control. A method for determination of optimum power control area comprises the steps of: confirming an optimum power control counter area and moving to a target area for performing the optimum power control(505); obtaining the noise level of error signals generated during data detection in the optimum power control test area(525); and determining whether to perform the optimum power control in the target area according to the noise level of error signals(545).
