Gear-shift mechanism mounted upon the steering column of a motor car comprises a hand lever 10 turned about its pivot pin 11 to slide a rod 15 axially for the selection of one or other of three channels corresponding to four forward ratios and reverse in a changespeed gear (not shown), a spring-biased plunger or, as shown, a ball 24 engaging in an axial slot 25 in the rod of sufficient length to permit the rod to be slidden freely between the positions corresponding to the selection of the two channels for the forward ratios, the selection of the channel for reverse requiring additional effort upon the hand lever 10 to force the ball &c. radially outwards of the slot against its spring bias. Having selected the appropriate channel, a ratio is then established by pivoting the hand lever 10 in-and-out of the plane of the Figure, a bracket 12 turning in a support (not shown) affixed to the steering- column to permit this movement. In the form shown, the ball 24 is engaged by a recessed pad 23 at the end of a plunger 22 biased by a spring 26 to engage the ball in its groove, a screw 28 closing a bore containing the plunger &c. The hand lever 10 has a forked end 13 coacting through a pin 16 with the ratio selecting &c. rod 15, and is held by an anti-rattle spring- biased plunger 17. As a modification, the ball 24 is omitted, the head 23 of the plunger 22 being of part-spherical configuration and engaging directly with the slot 25 in the rod 15.
