A carton of the type having a base 23 sides 12, 13 and ends 16, in which the sides have flaps 15 and lugs 18 engaging slits 17 in the ends, is erected in a die-and-plunger machine having recesses 26, Fig. 2, in the die walls to accommodate a part of each end wall 16 when displaced by a finger 28 thereby presenting opened slits 17 for engagement by the flaps 15 and lugs 18. Means is provided to turn over the top of each end 16 thereby bending the lugs 18 inwardly and lock them in position. The recesses 26 have ribs 31 cooperating with fingers 30 to guide the flaps 15 and lugs 18 into the opened slits. The fingers 30 may be omitted. Towards the end of the stroke of the plunger, the underside of the carton base 23 strikes a projecting lever 36 and a further lever 39 connected thereto by a rod 40 is swung down and folds over the top of the ends 16 and also the lugs 18. The slits 17 are closed by the die walls as the carton descends. The cartons are ejected from the lower end of the die. |
