An RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) system for reducing the power consumption and an operation method thereof are provided to prevent an RFID reader from unnecessarily consuming power by transmitting a tag sensing signal having the smaller than a tag communication signal when the RFID reader does not perform communication with an RFID tag. An RFID reader(100) transmits a tag sensing signal or tag detection power of a smaller level than that of a tag sensing signal or tag communication power, during the initial operation. The RF field is formed by the transmitted tag sensing signal. When the RFID tag(200) enters the RF field, the RFID reader senses the RFID tag and then transmits a tag communication signal to perform communication with the RFID tag. The tag sensing signal is periodically activated or deactivated.
