It is possible to provide a small-size and thin zoom lens having a simple configuration and preferable optical performance corresponding to a high pixel density imaging element and an imaging device using the zoom lens. The zoom lens (1) includes a first lens group (GR1) having a weak refractive power, a second lens group (GR2) having a negative refractive power, a third lens group (GR3) having a positive refractive power, and a forth lens group (GR4) having a positive refractive power arranged in this order from the object side, so that zooming is performed by shifting the second lens group and the third lens group. The first lens group is formed by a single lens (G1) having a negative refractive power, a prism (G2) for bending the optical path, and a single lens (G3) having a positive refractive power arranged in this order from the object side. The second lens group is formed by a single lens (G4) having a negative refractive power. The zoom lens satisfies the following Expression (1): (1) t2/fw < 0.4, wherein t2 is a center thickness of the single lens having a negative refractive power constituting the second lens group and fw is a focal length of the entire lens system in the wide angle end.
