Dry cleaning solvents (e.g. petrol, ligroin and other low boiling paraffins; benzene, toluene, xylene and other low boiling aromatics; carbon tetrachloride, or tri-, or perchlorethylene) contain as an "improver" an ester of a mono- or di-saccharide, e.g. glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, or maltose with a fatty acid containing at least 6 carbon atoms, the amount of "improver" used being 0.2-5% by weight of the goods being cleaned. The monoesters of acids such as lauric, palmitic, oleic, tallow, and coconut acids are preferred, but higher esters may also be used. Water in amounts of 10-50% by weight of the "improver" is generally included, and higher alkylamines may also be present to increase the wetting power of the water.
