[Also in Group XXII] A machine for removing the jacket 1 from an irradiated fuel slug 2 is shown diagrammatically in plan view in Fig. 1 and comprises a support 3 for supporting the jacketed slug in alignment with a hole in a fixed member 4, the hole having a diameter, slightly greater than that of the slug. A push-rod 7 in alignment with the slug is operated by a piston 9 in a cylinder 10, a further piston 8 being connected to a carriage having rollers 12 guided on rails 11, the carriage supporting a pair of cutting wheels 5. In operation, fluid is admitted to pipe 15 to move the piston 8 to the left, the wheels 5 first moving the jacket 1 against the member 4 and then cutting the jacket wall along two diametrically opposite lines, the cutting edges of the wheels being spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the diameter of the slug 2. After the cutting operation the piston 9 is moved to the left by admitting fluid to the pipe 16 whereby the slug is pushed by the rod 7 through the hole in the member 4 and is forced from the two portions of the slit jacket. The machine is immersed in water contained in a tank (Fig. 2, not shown). The jacketed slugs are fed to the support 3 by gravity through a hopper (Fig. 3, not shown), and the slit jacket portions are removed from the support by an ejector also shown in Fig. 3. The cutting wheels 5 are carried by levers 22 pivoted by spindles 23 to the carriage 6, Fig. 6, these levers being biased by springs 21 against adjustable cams 20 whereby the distance between the cutting edges may be varied. A pointer 45 and scale 44 indicate the cam positions. A spring-loaded roller (Fig. 4, not shown), carried by the carriage 6 bears on the jacket 1 to hold it downwards against the support 3.</p>
