A method for controlling the operation of a portable terminal by using an image input device and the portable terminal are provided to control a specific function which is being performed, easily by using the image input device which is operating. An image is inputted from a camera(510). The total sum or mean value of binary values for each pixel data within one frame of digital data in which the inputted image is converted is calculated(520). The calculated total sum or mean value is compared with a predetermined threshold value(530). If the calculated total sum or mean value is the threshold value or less, the number of frames for showing the blocked lightness is counted(540). Whether the counted value is m or greater is determined(550). If so, a control signal is counted(560). Whether the input of the control signal is terminated(570). If so, an operation corresponding to the number of the counted control signals is performed(580).
