A G-force absorption apparatus 10 which absorbs the G-force resulting from an explosion event near a vehicle, the apparatus comprises a first mounting member in the form of a support frame 12 fixed to a vehicle chassis (not shown), and a second mounting member, in the form of a seal back frame 14 attached to an occupant seat assembly 16. An absorption mechanism 20 in the form of a mitigating strip 22 is provided between the mounting members 12, 14 and first, second and third anvils 26, 28, 30 are provided such that when the vehicle, and hence the first mounting member 12, is subjected to the explosion induced G-force, the mitigating strip 22 is bent and pulled over the anvils 26, 28, 30. This absorbs a portion of the G-force which would otherwise be imparted on the occupant hence minimizing the risk of injury to the occupant. A method of protecting a vehicle occupant from explosion induced G-force is also provided. |
