An apparatus and a method for synchronizing timing in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system are provided to improve performance of the mobile communication system by detecting a position of an FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) window based on a weight center position of a multi path. A timing synchronization apparatus of a mobile communication system includes an FFT window detector. The FFT window detector includes an N sample delay unit (701), a slipping adder(703), a peak detector(707), a center position detector(709) and an accumulator(705). The slipping adder outputs the correlation value between the samples of a protective section and a data section inside one symbol. The peak detector confirms the point of time when the correlation value is the maximum. The center position detector obtains the weight-center position of the multi-path by using the point of time. The FFT window detector sets up the obtained weight-center position to the position of the FFT window.
