A vertical magnetic recording head is provided to reduce magnetic interaction between adjacent data tracks of discrete magnetic track media or pattern media and implement high track density by controlling the width of a magnetic record track of the vertical magnetic recording head. A vertical magnetic recording head comprises: a main pole(151) in which the width of a recording medium side end part becomes narrow towards a recording medium; a return yoke of which a magnetic path is made with the main pole; and a coil inducing the magnetic field for magnetic recording in the main pole. The width of a magnetic record track formed in the recording medium with the magnetic field emitted in the vertical magnetic recording head is controlled by the size of recording current which is input to the coil.
