The work boot has a plastics toe cap (13). A stamped mesh blank (6) is tacked to the toe tip by a zig-zag seam (7) which runs perpendicular to the sole over the toe area and the mesh is stitched underneath the upper leather vamp (2) by a quilted seam (5). The upper leather vamp is roughened along the connecting edge and the mesh and vamp are connected by a zigzag seam (9) to the mesh band (10) which is stitched to the membrane lining (3). The rear edge of the toe cap runs at a distance from the front edge of the upper leather vamp so that plastics can flow into the interspace to form the plastics cap.
