Air decontamination device and method using a non-thermal plasma filter to remove contaminants and an aromatic hydrocarbon to breakdown ozone

A method of decontaminating air is disclosed. The steps comprise directing an air stream to be decontaminated through a non-thermal plasma filter 22 so that free radicals are produced by which contaminants in the air stream are neutralised. The ozone in the air stream output from the non-thermal plasma filter is then broken down with the breakdown being accelerated by subjecting the air stream to ultra-violet radiation and exposure to a catalyst 26. Then a hydrocarbon having a carbon-carbon double bond is introduced into the air stream to preferentially react with any residual ozone. The air stream thus becomes suitable for human exposure and a free-radical cascade is produced.
