A digital broadcasting system and a control method thereof are provided to encode mobile service data additionally and transmit the encoded data to a receiving system, thereby improving receiving performance of the receiving system. A broadcast signal in which mobile service data and main service data are multiplexed is received. Virtual channel information and the first program table information are parsed by using fast information channel signaling information. Information which indicates that the second program table information including the descriptor describing event information of the mobile service data are received is obtained from the first program table. The second program table information is parsed. The event information is stored. The service guide information including event information is expressed.
