An apparatus and a method for displaying a caption are provided to display caption data corresponding to a preset caption mode when a user watches a broadcasting program of a specific channel, thereby automatically determining caption data without selecting a specific caption mode case by case. It is determined whether a caption mode exists according to a preset EIA-708 mode in analyzed caption data(S101). When the caption data exists, the corresponding caption data are signal-processed and displayed(S102,S103). When the caption data does not exist, it is determined whether a caption mode exists according to an EIA-608 mode that a user presets. When the caption mode exists, the caption data according to the corresponding caption mode are signal-processed and displayed(S105,S106).
