<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas cleaning system capable of shortening a time to reach a catalyst temperature zone the catalyst activity of which is effective, and capable of reducing the exhaust gas discharge amount at the low catalyst temperature. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas cleaning system includes: exhaust gas cleaning catalyst; an oxide generating heat by light; and light irradiation means, wherein in the vicinity of the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst or a position in contact with the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst, pyrogenic oxide is disposed, and the pyrogenic oxide is irradiated with light from the light irradiation means, so as to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst by the pyrogenic oxide. The thermal capacity of the pyrogenic oxide is reduced compared with a cordierite carrier supporting the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst and the pyrogenic oxide.
