A centrifugal pump (10) including a motor (12) connected to a volute hous ing (14). The volute housing is configured to receive a pumping mechanism th at includes an impeller (26) rotatably connected to the motor. At the impell er suction side the volute housing includes a wear plate (40) and a snap rin g (54). The volute housing may also include a removeable cover (58) that pro vides access to the interior of the volute housing and to components of the pumping mechanism. In one exemplary embodiment, the removeable cover is conn ected to the volute housing by fasteners, such as bolts (66). By removing th e cover, the impeller, wear plate, and other components of the pumping mecha nism may be disassembled and, if necessary, serviced, without the need to re move the motor from the volute housing. In another exemplary embodiment, a g asket (56) having an integrated flapper valve (60) is secured between the co ver and the volute housing. The flapper valve is positioned to align with a fluid inlet formed in the cover and acts as a check valve, substantially pre venting fluid within the volute housing from exiting through the inlet (62).
