PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescence element that can be manufactured easily and has improved luminous characteristics and life characteristics, and to provide a method of manufacturing the organic electroluminescence (EL) element. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescence element has: a positive electrode; a light-emitting layer; a negative electrode; and a metal oxide layer provided between the positive electrode and the light-emitting layer, or between the light-emitting layer and the negative electrode. In the organic electroluminescence element, the metal oxide layer is obtained by a process A for obtaining a non-treated metal oxide layer by depositing a metal oxide on the other layer for composing the element, and a process B for exposing the non-treated metal oxide layer under atmosphere containing oxygen.
