A cross-flow has a central area (20) and five peripheral areas (22) that stretch from the central area in different directions and are separated from each other by side sections running towards the central section. A first fluid (26) has a first wettability regarding a material in a fluid pipeline and is held by capillary forces in the peripheral areas of the cross-flow. A second fluid (24) has a second wettability regarding the material in the fluid pipeline. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fluid pipeline with a main direction of flow and a cross-flow flowing crosswise to the main direction of flow.
