In the preheat control, the valve opening timing of an intake valve 38 is set near the intake top dead center, and the valve closing timing is set near the intake bottom dead center. An exhaust valve 40 is held in a closed state. The air in a combustion chamber 16 is compressed in an exhaust stroke, and the heated compressed air is jetted into an intake port 20 at the beginning of an intake stroke. Since the interval of the intake stroke can be set long, a sufficient amount of air can be sucked into the combustion chamber 16.
