PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoxy resin comprising a biomass-derived component, which is produced using as a raw material a product obtained via liquification of a biomass material and particularly a plant biomass material without the use of phenols. SOLUTION: The epoxy resin is obtained by converting a phenolic hydroxy group in a liquified biomass alcohol containing an alcoholic hydroxy group and a phenolic hydroxy group into an alcoholic hydroxy group under alkaline or neutral conditions and then reacting the alcoholic hydroxy group in the liquified biomass alcohol with epichlorohydrin.
