The present invention relates to feature extraction methods for fingerprint imagesusingthird level feature information such as sweat pores and using this information for enrolment, matching, storage of fingerprint templates. The apparatus identifiescandidate sweat pore regions from an intensity profile, models the intensity profile in at least one dimension in each candidate pore region and identifies at least one of the centre, the size and the shape of the sweat pore from said modelled intensity profile.
