PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of performing chemical cleaning of an immersion type membrane module on line leaving the membrane module set in an immersion tank, suppressing an amount of chemical liquid used when performing the chemical cleaning to low amount, and performing chemical cleaning without contaminating the inside of the immersion tank with the chemical liquid, and to provide an immersion type membrane filtering apparatus suitable for performing the chemical cleaning. SOLUTION: The method is for cleaning the immersion type membrane module set inside the immersion tank storing water to be treated, wherein the chemical liquid is run from a permeating water taking-out port of the immersion type membrane module after discharging the whole water to be treated in the immersion tank, the chemical liquid running is stopped when a secondary side of the immersion type membrane module is filled with the chemical liquid and held for a given time, then with the chemical liquid held in the secondary side of the membrane module, water is supplied to the immersion tank, air is jetted from a lower side of the immersion type membrane module for air cleaning, then the whole amount of water in the immersion tank is discharged, and after that the water to be treated is supplied into the immersion tank.
