PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition for active matrix type liquid crystal display elements, having a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range, low viscosity and negative dielectric anisotropy, and to provide active matrix type liquid crystal display elements using the composition. SOLUTION: A nematic liquid crystal composition comprising a compound represented by general formula (1) as the first ingredient and a compound represented by general formula (2) as the second ingredient and having negative dielectric anisotropy is provided.
