Method and apparatus are provided for making a filter element by spinning fibers from one or more dies onto a collector, including designated combinations providing designated filter characteristics. Pets of thermoplastic polymer, are introduced into a pellet hopper of an extruder. The thermoplastic polymer is forced into a die head by the extruder which is driven by drive. The thermoplastic polymer is then forced out of a row of spinnerets, in the die head into a gas stream which attenuates the thermoplastic polymer into fibers which are collected on a moving collecting device to form a continuous web. The gas stream which attenuates the thermoplastic polymer is supplied through gas jets.
