PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the external shape of an image reading apparatus by positioning an image reading unit in the image reading range of a medium placing section by installing a shutter that covers the image reading unit freely openably and closably. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus comprises an image reading unit for reading the image of a document, a scanning mechanism for using the image reading unit for scanning to read the image of the document placed on the medium placing section, a document feeding mechanism which is arranged above the scanning mechanism and feeds the document by conveying it to the image reading unit, and a shutter that covers the image reading unit freely openably and closably.
