PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe collagen-like polypeptide which is free from risks of pathogen infections or adverse effects. SOLUTION: In a production method of the new polypeptide, a peptide component (A) represented by formula (1a): X-(Pro-Y-Gly)<SB>n</SB>-OH (wherein X is H or a group: HOOC-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-CO- (wherein m is 1-18); Y is Pro or Hyp; and n is 1-20) and a peptide component (B) represented by formula (2a): X-(Z)<SB>r</SB>-OH (wherein Z is a peptide chain comprising 1-10 amino acid residue(s); and r is 1 to 20) and, optionally, a compound (C) represented by formula (3a): H<SB>2</SB>N-R-NH<SB>2</SB>(wherein R is a linear or branched 1-18C alkylene group) when X represents HOOC-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-CO- in the formula (1a) and/or (2a), are subjected to a condensation reaction in the presence of a dehydrating and condensing agent and a condensing auxiliary. The ratio of the peptide component (A) to the peptide component (B) is from 100/0 to 30/70 (mol%), and the ratio of the compound (C) to the total molar amount of the peptide components (A) and/or (B) is substantially 1 mol.
