PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data sorting apparatus which prevents determination accuracy from being reduced and can be easily mounted when the apparatus is applied to failure detection or failure diagnosis. SOLUTION: The data sorting apparatus for classifying a plurality of input data into a plurality of categories has: a prototype selection means 13 for selecting a prototype of a category closest to read input data; a prototype evaluation means 14 for evaluating whether the selected prototype is proper or not; a prototype adding means 15 for adding other prototype when the selected prototype is not proper; and an internal data correction means 16 correcting at least one of an area determination parameter for regulating the size of a category area in each category and the prototype. Since the size of the category area can be set in each category, data can be appropriately sorted, and when the data sorting apparatus is applied to failure detection or failure diagnosis, determination accuracy can be improved.
