PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate the alcohol concentration of a fuel in use with less error. SOLUTION: Actual rich side air-fuel ratio correction amount Kfr and lean side air-fuel ratio correction amount Kfl when an air-fuel ratio is controlled to richer side and leaner side target air-fuel ratios 14.1, 15.1 than the stoichiometry of a reference fuel are acquired. The ratios of the differences between these correction amounts and the reference correction amount 1.0 equivalent to the stoichiometry of the reference fuel to the differences between the rich side correction amount Kfrg and the lean side correction amount Kflg of the reference fuel equivalent to the target air-fuel ratio and the reference correction amount Zr=¾Kfr-1¾/¾Kfrg-1¾, Zl=¾Kfl-1¾/¾Kflg-1¾ are calculated. Based on these rich side and lean side ratios Zr, Zl, the alcohol concentration of the fuel is estimated.
