Disclosed is a liquid crystal aligning agent containing a reaction product between at least one substance selected from the group consisting of polysiloxanes having a structure represented by the formula (S-1) below, hydrolysis products of such polysiloxanes and condensates of such hydrolysis products, and a compound represented by the formula (1) below: R-Z. (In the formula (S-1), Y1 represents a hydroxy group, an alkoxyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms, an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms or an aryl group having 6-10 carbon atoms. In the formula (1), R represents an alkyl group having 4-20 carbon atoms, a group having a fluoroalkyl group having 1-20 carbon atoms or a cyclohexyl group, or a group having 17-51 carbon atoms and a steroid structure. X1 in the formula (S-1) and Z in the formula (1) respectively represent groups which react with each other and form a linking group bonding a silicon atom in the formula (S-1) with R in the formula (1).)
