PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost, improved image forming apparatus correcting inclination or distortion of a scanning line of an optical system without using expensive optical components, and also, without performing precise fine adjustment upon assembling. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image correcting means for shifting image data inputted to the exposure means toward a sub scanning direction at a plurality of offset positions in a main scanning direction so as to compensate the deformation of the developer image caused by the shape of the exposure means; and a smoothing means for smoothing the image by obtaining an intermediate point between two adjacent offset positions in the image data corrected by the image correcting means, and further, controlling the exposure means to supply a dot which is smaller in size then one pixel to an area between the adjacent intermediate points.
