PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily achieve photographing with a focal distance in a super-wide angle area and a super-telephoto area and to enable photographing by consecutive variable power in a focusing range from the wide angle area to the telephoto area (focal distance several times greater than that in the wide angle area). SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus includes: a variable power lens 101; imaging means 102 which converts an image received by the variable power lens into an electric image signal; and image control means 103. Referring to a conversion coordinate coefficient prepared according to the variable power rate of the variable power lens, the image control means generates a fresh image signal by moving a point on an image defined by an image signal generated by imaging means and coordinate-converting, and outputs a fresh image signal. The variable power lens includes five lens groups of positive, negative, positive, negative, and positive refractive powers, and has a T lens group T inserted into the fourth group G4 and the fifth group G5 so as to be removable.
