An auxiliary thread is prepared for spinning-on, by a service assembly used for each of numerous spinning stations. Relevant thread parameters are sent via a data transmission system (26) to the workstation (2) control unit (10). Drives (18, 19, 20) of the open-ended spinning unit (3), located at the workstation, are operated by the local control unit (10) in accordance with the thread parameters called-up. Following a change-over between wound- and empty spools, the local spinning- and spinning-on parameters for the auxiliary thread are provided temporarily, to enable reliable spinning-on.
