PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost, improved image forming apparatus correcting inclination or distortion of a scanning line of an optical system without using expensive optical components, and also, without performing precise fine adjustment upon assembling. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier that carries an electrostatic latent image on the surface thereof; an electrifying means for electrifying the surface of the image carrier; an exposure means for irradiating the electrified surface of the image carrier with light and forming the electrostatic latent image; a developing means for developing the electrostatic latent image formed on the surface of the image carrier with a developer; and a transfer means for transferring the developer image formed on the surface of the image carrier to a recording material. The image forming apparatus also includes: an image correcting means for correcting image data inputted to the exposure means so as to compensate the deformation of the developer image caused by the shape of the exposure means; and a smoothing means for smoothing the image by controlling the exposure means so as to supply a dot which is smaller in size than one pixel to a white image area of the image data corrected by the image correcting means.
