PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce costs and to save on an installation space by using an image scanner as a stand type or handy type bar code reader. SOLUTION: An arm part 130 is erected on a base part 110 to mount a subject thereon, and the arm part 130 freely attachably and detachably supports an imaging section 190 in a state where the section 190 is separated from the base part 110. An attachment/detachment detection section 149 detects attachment/detachment of the imaging section 190 to/from the arm part 130 and outputs the result to a control section 150. In the case where the imaging section 190 is supported by the arm part, the control section 150 sets, to the imaging section 190, a stand mode during which the distance between the imaging section 190 supported by the arm part and the base part 110 is regarded as an imaging distance, and in the case where the imaging section 190 is detached from the arm part, the control section 150 sets, to the imaging section 190, a handy mode during which the imaging distance is made closer than that of the stand mode.
