PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus preventing visibility from being deteriorated due to scintillation. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus is provided with: illuminating means (laser light sources 6R, 6G and 6B) including light sources; optical modulation means (liquid crystal light valves 7R, 7G and 7B) for modulating light emitted from the illuminating means in accordance with an image signal and forming an image; a scintillation reduction means (diffusion plate 11) for reducing the scintillation generated by the light emitted from the illuminating means. The image forming apparatus is configured to display the image so as to have a plurality of areas different in scintillation reduction level in the image in accordance with the image information for every image area.
