A polarizer comprises a base having a specific structure with a periodicity formed on a flat substrate to realize optical characteristics as designed in the process of forming a multilayer film which has a shape adequately following that of the base so as to produce a photonic crystal. The polarizer comprising a base having a ridge/groove structure with a periodicity formed on a flat substrate is characterized in that the base is mainly made of SiO2, the ridge/groove structure has a periodicity in the X-axis direction and has a uniformity in the y-axis direction when the x- and y-axes are defined perpendicularly to each other and parallel to the plane of the flat substrate and the z-axis is defined perpendicularly to the plane, the periodic interval is 80 to 450 nm, the height of the ridge/groove structure in the z-axis direction is in the range of 0.25 to 0.75 times the periodic interval, and the variation of the height is 0.14h or less where h is an average of the height. |
