The machine has upper and lower bars (7, 8) comprising tools (9, 10), where a workpiece (12) is fixed between the tools for folding a sheet metal section (13). A folding bar (11) has a folding rail (16) pivoting about a machine-fixed pivot axis between lower and upper initial positions for positive and negative folds of the section, where the pivot axis corresponds to running of a folding edge of the workpiece. Working edges of the rail are changed between the folds such that one of the working edges is formed at a movable part of the rail and moved parallel to the other working edge.
